Evolution of SJM

WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR

The promoters of the Trust initially focused on the economic migrants who have come from North to South India in search of livelihood and bare necessities. Dire poverty and unemployment in the north, east and central India have driven the people to take the extreme step of leaving their loved ones and families. Knowing that they have to reckon with people of different cultures and languages, they embarked on a long and tedious journey towards states like Tamil Nadu. They are susceptible and vulnerable to exploitation by the unscrupulous elements of the host region. They are not aware of human rights, labour laws and regulations which protect the wage earners because they are uneducated and helpless. They need moral and emotional support to develop a sense of belonging and feel comfortable in the new surroundings.

After prayer and receiving divine guidance, we reached out to these migrants, got to know their spiritual and emotional needs and looked for ways to help and support them. We started telling them about the love of Jesus and brought them together every Sunday for prayer and worship. They feel comfortable and secure when they join hands with similarly placed other migrants. Hindi speaking Christian workers are being engaged to reach out to these migrants in their need and loneliness with the love of Jesus. The ministry has borne fruits in select localities, though much remains to be done both in terms of reaching out to new areas and extending the scope of present ministry.

Special tuition is being arranged for children of these migrants who have to learn Tamil and adapt themselves to a new environment. Medical help is being arranged in emergency situations to the migrants and their families.
